Paul Velazquez, better known as artist Paul Fresha, was born in 1990 and was raised in the vibrant south part of the Bronx's Little Italy. Growing up surrounded by diverse ethnicities and urban cultures, Paul developed a deep appreciation for the dynamic world around him. His childhood was filled with memorable experiences, spending countless hours at his aunt and uncle's video store, where he immersed himself in cinema and pop culture. Being a 90's baby, Paul was fortunate to witness a flourishing era of music, toys, movies, games, and more, fueling his observant and unique perspective.
In the early 2000s, as Paul entered a new phase of life with a change in location and school, he discovered his creative talent for drawing at the age of 11. Collaborating with his classmates, Kaybe and Jeffery, who were skilled illustrators, Paul found inspiration in comic books and animated characters, honing his skills and realizing his ability to bring any vision to life through his art.
Like many teenagers, Paul's rebellious spirit emerged during his teenage years, particularly from 2003 to 2005, when he became fascinated with the street culture of graffiti. He became captivated by the art form's aesthetics and the challenges it presented, knowing that the risk of getting caught by the police or vandal squad was high. Paul dedicated countless hours at home perfecting his handstyles and bubble letters, drawing inspiration from iconic graffiti crews and writers featured in films such as "Fuck Graff," "State Your Name," and "Graff is Dead." Despite the risks, Paul and his friends ventured out late at night, claiming the streets as their own and leaving their mark wherever they went. This period not only nurtured his artistic style but also taught him valuable lessons in self-promotion and marketing before the advent of social media. Ultimately, Paul decided to leave the graffiti lifestyle behind, acknowledging the consequences it entailed, and shifted his focus to aggressive inline skating.
Moving forward to Paul's late teenage years, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery by working diligently in various retail fashion positions throughout New York City's prominent districts. Despite his successes in these roles, he reached a crossroads, realizing that a career in retail offered limited prospects for long-term success and personal fulfillment. With a desire for more, Paul made the decision to enroll at Monroe College as a culinary student while working part-time as a valet at Jacobi Hospital. Over the course of two years, he dedicated himself to mastering the culinary arts, excelling in his classes and embracing the discipline required to achieve excellence. However, despite his accomplishments, Paul experienced a setback when a breakup led to a period of depression. This challenge served as a catalyst for self-reflection and pushed him to explore his true purpose in life. While still completing his degree, he began seeking solace in various activities, including decorating his bedroom. In a serendipitous moment, he stumbled upon a YouTube tutorial on creating art, sparking his interest in abstract fluid art known as crayon melting.
With a simple DIY project, Paul unknowingly unearthed his artistic calling. Intrigued by the process, he delved deeper into the world of art, continuously exploring and expanding his skills. What started as a therapeutic outlet soon blossomed into a full-fledged passion. Today, Paul Fresha is an artist known for his unique blend of influences, combining his love for graffiti, pop culture, and abstract expressionism into visually captivating pieces.
